How to Figure Out Her Ring Size
Most men don’t know much about ring sizes, which makes it really difficult to surprise your girlfriend with a stunning engagement ring that you expect to fit on her finger. Here is a basic overview of ring size and a few sneaky ways you can find out your girlfriend’s ring size without blowing your cover.
Ring Sizing in the U.S. and Beyond
Men and women do not have separate scales for ring size, unlike with shoes. So there is no such thing as a “women’s size 7 ring,” for example a size 7 in men’s is equal to a size 7 in women’s.
In the United States, ring size follows a numerical scale from 1 to 16, in quarter-inch increments. In the United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia, ring sizes use a letter system. In Japan, rings are sized by whole numbers only. And in Germany, rings use the actual circumference of the ring in millimeters.
The trouble with ring size is that the same person may go up or down a full size or more depending on what they’ve been doing that day. Of course, this makes your job harder as you try to purchase the correct size engagement ring without your girlfriend’s knowledge.
Ways to Find Out Your Girlfriend’s Engagement Ring Size
Getting the size right is pretty important when it comes to the engagement ring, which is why people have devised many sneaky methods of determining a girl’s ring size over the years. Some of these include:
♥ Take a ring she already owns to the jeweler. If she already wears a ring on her ring finger and sometimes takes it off, this is your opportunity. If you can borrow it for a day or so without it being noticed, take it to the jeweler and get its size.
♥ Make an impression or use your own finger. If you can’t borrow her ring for long without it being noticed, wait until she removes it and either press it in a bar of soap or slip it on your own finger (marking where it falls on your finger.) These methods may not be incredibly accurate, but they’re better than nothing and at least get you in the right ballpark.
♥ Ask a friend or her mother. Women talk about these kinds of things among themselves, so it’s entirely possible that your girlfriend’s mom or best friend already knows her ring size. If not, maybe one of them could do a little legwork for you and find out without making her suspicious.
♥ Go engagement ring shopping together. So maybe this is not the most romantic way to propose, but the best way to determine her correct engagement ring size is to have her at the jeweler’s with you.
Use these tips and do your best to get her ring size right, but don’t get too worked up about it. Even the ring it is too big or too small, your girlfriend can take it to the jeweler to have it resized later. Most jewelers will re-size an engagement rings bought from them down for free. (So if you’re not sure, err on the side of too big. Otherwise, they may charge you for the extra gold.)
A word of caution: for the proposal, it’s better to err on the side of too big than too small. After she screams “Yes, I’ll marry you!” she’ll want to show off the ring – and a ring that sits loosely on her finger is better than one she can’t force on her finger at all.
